No doubt, anything that is implemented wrong can be counterproductive.

However I have watched games of Yace, where it could not make any progress in
won position. To see the real win was just too deep. When approaching the 50
moves rule, Yace sacced a pawn, to see the progress some moves later.

Sure, it can also happen the other side around: You sac more and more of the
advantage, until you get lost. I think, this case is much more rare in the
context of the 50 moves rule, but I have seen it in the case of trying to avoid
repetions.

BTW. I also had the bug with the checkmate in the 100th ply ...
