That depends on your perspective. Computer chess consists of a variety of
different, but related, topics. Not everyone defines the human vs. machine
encounter as the driving force behind their interest in computer chess. I'm
certainly guilty of that. The same applies to the various fractions that each in
their own way puts various programs on a pedestal and worships their every move.

Then add those that are obsessed with acquiring the best hardware and/or
competing at chess servers; people who are dedicated to the preservation and
development of certain (obscure) protocols, amateur program awareness and a lot
more strange and peculiar stuff. Unless you have a very narrow focal point, I
think there's always something worthy of attention if you look.
