For normal programs, take the NPS, multiply by the time per move you intend to use, and you need at _least_ that many hash entries to avoid lots of lost information. You will need to know the size of a hash entry as you have to multiply the above number by that to get the number of bytes you need. Crafty needs maybe 1/4 that much (or even less) as it doesn't hash the q-search nodes which greatly reduces demands on the hash table.
