For those not having seen this before, I am going to be in Washington DC, on June 13, to play a one game exhibition between Crafty and GM Yermolinsky. This is being done at the Smithsonian, with the game set to start in the middle of the afternoon (I believe it will be a game/30 sort of time control to keep the program there "on time"). I am going to give a short intro talk about Crafty, the parallel search, how it has been developed, "freeware" and so forth, then the game, then a summary by GM Yermolinsky on his thoughts about computer chess. Again, Crafty has played *many* games against him so there won't be any "computer shock" to deal with... Just a little opening preparation by myself and a GM "friend" that is helping me. :) I'll post the results after it is over... we are planning on running this "live" on ICC... I will log in and make moves there as they are played during the game, although if it gets into a time scramble, it will obviously result in ICC "losing the thread." If interested, I can even post the "log" from the game after it is over. We are working on getting a Digital multi-alpha machine, just to see how it will do, so a couple of million nodes per second is easily doable, and should be interesting. Worst case will have me using my 4-processor ALR just as I play it on ICC... More later... And appologies to Amir for "copying his subject line"... but it seemed appropriate. :) On another note, as I had suspected, the GM "tournament" never was finished. Yasser was reluctant to play a computer in "public" for reasons that are his personally. I have no problem with that. As a result, the final results were: Crafty/Yasser, 3.0/4.0, Roman/ Christiansen 0.5/4.0... Note that Yasser has played many games against Crafty, but as several GM's do, he tends to do it anonymously so that he doesn't draw large crowds observing. I always respect their request for staying anonymous whenever they ask, since the games are invaluable to me, naturally. The only player that I am pretty sure I haven't played against is Kasparov. Most of the others have played at one time or another, some for many hundreds of games. It's too bad that they prefer secrecy, as the games are most interesting to watch... Some unbelievable tactics, some ugly positional squeezes, both by the computer and by the GM, and so forth. Wish we could make a pgn file of these... with real names. It produces some very interesting chess at times (and, of course some ugly wins and losses as well.. :) ) Bob
