My 5-min rating is also lower, by about 100 points. I normally play
computers, so what's happened in my case is I've figured out how to
beat the usual programs I play. With 5-min, comps are banned, and you
don't get to choose your human opponents, either. Most of your opponents
handles are new to you, especially since all the new 5-min players start
  with a 1600 rating.
Although some will be a bit indignant at their low 5-min rating, they
are a more accurate indicator than normal blitz.
