I have noticed that there appears to be large scale computer chess phobia among many chessplayers, particulary strong master class players. This fear is manifested in a tendency to underrate the strength of todays programs. I have observed that in nearly all of the annotations i have seen on the deepblue kasparov match many grandmasters attempt to redicule the play of deepblue and to be overly critical. In my opionion this is rediculous because if deepblue plays so badly how can it do what no human has been able to do defeat kasparov in a match. I have also noticed in chess life Lev alburt's rediculous claim that the best chess computers including deepblue are no more than 2500 elo. His constant attacks on the strength of chess computers becomes understandable when one discoveres as i did that he was the first grandmaster to lose to a computer!! Other instances of Computer Chess Phobia is certain players refuseing to play fritz 5 in the inpuls tournament claiming they don't play chess computers on Principal(whatever that means). Is it possible that many fear that because programs are becoming so strong many amatuer class players such as myself will no longer need lessons or may no longer participate in simuls, for after all why would i pay to play a grandmaster when i can simply buy fritz 5 and play one in the comforts of home!!
