There are more reasons for the move 4. Be7 after 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 Bb4+ 4.
Bd2 Be7 5. Nf3:

1. White bishop on d2 is underdeveloped. It´s full power is on b2 square with g5
and f4 being second best places for it. To go to b2 it will lose 2 times! The
bishop can go to c3 also, but from there it will block the c file for white
rooks and will also be a target for a black rook on it.

2. Bishop on d2 block white queen control over d4 so that moves like c5 for
black will be easier (white also has less control over d5...).
