Hi, Try this first: captures before other moves. It works nicely, specially in the quiescence search (if you don't have one, you should make it). There are several ordering heuristics. History heuristic is very effective and easy to write. Killer heuristic is also popular. You can also store the best move at every node (or the move producing the beta cut) in the hash tables and then try that move first when you revisit the node (I think most of us do that). The order at the root node is the most important. When a move becomes selected as the best so far, you should put it in the first place, shifting the moves in the middle. If anyone have good links about move ordering, please post them. Álvaro.
