As Robert Hyatt once told me, "It's not that Crafty is weaker than commercials solely because it's open source. I believe that the commercials simply wouldn't be as strong as they are, if Crafty wasn't open source." In other words, Crafty is _NOT_ by any means weak. I believe it to be the best against humans. But I wouldn't believe for one second, that Frans, Stefan, Chris, Ed, Shay, Donniger, have never seen the code of Crafty. Perhaps some have even studied it. Robert Hyatt has been doing this a _LONG_ time, and the man knows his stuff. I have thanked him 1,000 times for what he gives to all of us, sharing all his knowledge and experiences. Even his arguements with other programmers usually teach me something. :) Ed & Chris might have a stronger engine, but they offer me _NO_ knowledge. How many times have you seen Frans, or Shay, or Ed, or Chris, respond to a thread titled, "How to improve time management?" They won't! They won't even share their ideas on TIME MANAGEMENT! I am not knocking anyone. Commercial programs are made to make money, and made for the masses. Crafty is made by one man, for one man. He just shares it with the world. Hyatt is a genius. And I thank him (and those like him: Bruce, Tom K., all the other open sourcers out there) a million. Computer chess wouldn't be where it is now, without Crafty. Slate
