Second round was played yesterday. Smirin beat Oratovsky and Alon
Greenfeld beat Kondin to score 2 out of 2. There are others with full
points.

Next round will be played on the 18th.

Junior met GM Yehuda Greenfeld (ELO 2465), one of the veteran GM's. This
is the 3rd time we meet him in a full-length tournament game. Previous
encounters were a draw (published in ICCAJ), and a loss (a bad case of
mishandling the queen side pawns).

Once again the motif was centre passed pawns. In a strange Sicilian, the
GM gave up a pawn to give Junior double isolated d-pawns. Junior threw
back a pawn in order to push the other, and gained the advantage. The
computer got just the position it wanted to reach, but, overvaluing its
advantage, found that it cannot make progress. A draw offer by Greenfeld
on the 37th move was not accepted, but 18 moves later we decided to go
home. The expert opinion around was that there is no way to win.
