Right!
The two losses in KKKup I had the following reasons:
1. book (game vs Rebel), see above
(Vincent already mentioned that this game may become a quick death
directly after the opening, as the used Diep version did not know to
handle the pawn structure in the French defense correctly for the black
pieces...)
2. time problems , time control was too short.
As Diep ran onto a 486 with 8 hours per move, I saw in the game vs
Chessmaster (Dieps second loss) Diep wanting to play a move repetion
just before the big mistake, wich was claimed as great tactics by CM.
Diep failed low just in time, but missed it lacking on time, followed by
the loosing move allowing that combination ...

Thats the story from my point of view ...

Diep showed in the Korrespondence Kup that it plays on the same level as
the other top programs do. I did not see a gap on that time control.
OK, four games is not representative at all, so obviously the Kup never
can decide which program plays best correspondence chess.

And one more thing: There is a difference between finding good moves and
always doing the correct one. One wong move may loose a game ...
So if there is a special time control, one program may play positionally
better, but the other one has better tactics, for example, the
positional better program will be stronger if the time control
increases, as it does also see the deciding tactics ...

Best wishes,

Ralph (who operated Diep in KKKup I)
