Good game by Tiger, ended by a nice exchange sac. 2. Quest. Tiger reacted wrongly after the opening moves (e5 was weak d5 should be played) and became a pawn down. Still, it put up tough resistance and when Quest failed to deliver the final blow, Tiger won by evaluating a passed pawn much better. Lucky? Yes, but without luck you can't become WMCCC. 3. Ferret. Great game, in which Ferret was slowly but surely outplayed. Finished in Tiger style with a direct attack. I liked this one very much. 4. Junior. I still can't believe this, as I think I gave Junior a point for free. The opening line Junior chose is not exactly the most crucial line in this Ruy Lopez. Ng4 was a novelty, after which Junior showed a negative eval, planning ... h5 Nh6??!. If this had come on the board, I am sure the game would have ended completely different. But Tiger played the disastrous f5??, after which Black is already lost. You can imagine my horror, that such a promising opening variation ended in a quick lost position.... 5. Rebel. Tough game, but Tiger played well after the pawn sacrifice. It evaluated the position better than Rebel and so the win was deserved. Up till now Tiger played good chess, with a bit of luck, but all the chances to become WMCCC. Before the start of the game against Crafty the computer of Jan Louwman crashed. A ventilator didn't work. Somehow, this became the turning point: 6. Crafty. Good opening with a slight advantage for White. But with e4? Tiger exchanged all pieces, leaving a completely drawn position. Also I didn't like h3?!, where Tiger first wanted to play the much stronger a3! 7. Goliath. Again a good opening with a slight advantage, but again Tiger didn't make anything of it and even felt worse. There were no winning chances in this game either and Goli deserved the draw. 8. Shredder. Quiet line, in which (I cannot say it differently!) Tiger committed suicide. The pawn sac was simply losing, which Tiger saw 1 move later. BTW, after seeing this I was so disappointed, that I left Maastricht. 9. Parsos. A not very much known line in the Ruy Lopez, where Tiger simply didn't want to develop the queenside pieces. I believe that shortly after the opening Tiger was already in trouble. Also the book was not OK here. So in the last 4 rounds Tiger lost the championship. After Shredder lost so many points in the first 7 rounds, I was sure Tiger was going to win the single title. But it didn't work... That's life, folks! Jeroen >With these losses it is justified that Tiger didn't become single world >champion. What is your explanation for this result? Did you play GT in >aggressive mode? What made Tiger lose especially the last game vs. an amateur?
