Subject: Instructive rook and pawn ending from 18th WMCC

Hi

I have attempted to analyze an interesting instructive rook and pawn ending
position in the game Quest-Ferret (1-0) in round 7 at the 18th wmcc.
[D]8/5k2/pr4p1/R5P1/P4PK1/8/8/8 b - - 0 1
Position after Quest played 51. Kxg4

I guess Ferret's 51... Ke6 reply is a mistake, it could have drawn by the move
51... Rc6.

Just an overview of the position, white should not be allowed to enter the 6th,
7th and 8th ranks without a counter attack on white's a-pawn. White is allowed
to occupy the square e5, and d5 (because there is Ke7 by black) but not on c5.
The pawn majority of white will tell that black king belongs to the kingside.

So as not to get lost on the different variations, the defence is centered on
control of c-file, the ability to attack the f/a pawns of white if white does
nothing and prevent white to have connected passed pawn. See the pgn pasted
below for possible variations.

Going through some lines I have encountered two positions which are perhaps
difficult for some programs.

[D]5k2/2R5/p5p1/r5P1/P3KP2/8/8/8 b - - 0 13
13... Kg8!!, 13... Rxa4??

[D]8/5k2/p5p1/P2R2P1/5PK1/8/8/2r5 b - - 0 4
4... Ke7!, 4... Rg1??

The move numbers (13... Kg8) refers to the pgn below and not on the actual game.
