I think the main issue is useability. Once you've played chess on a Palm or
iPaq you can really see the benefits. I play more chess on my Palm / iPAQ than
on a PC or wooden board combined. Of course I probably spend more time with a
PC program, playing PC v PC games or analysing but little Steve v PC. The
dedicated portable machines are just not as useable (although the New LCD Chess
looks promising). With the Palm you don't have to worry about losing pieces and
the speed of entry is unsurpassed.

As regards strength - they are strong. Genius on my iPaq gives me a good
thrashing and the nice thing is that I can save the game, sync with the desktop
and then let Tiger / Junior / Fritz et. al. tell me where I went wrong. The ARM
chip is running at 206 MHz and I expect Tiger and Shredder will achieve 10 knps
- 20 knps. This is enough to play a really decent level of chess - certainly
stronger than the dedicated portables and probably stronger than the dedicated
desktops.

Go on Jouni, try one - you don't know what you're missing!

Steve
