IE on a different angle, Eugene's EGTBs are _obviously_ free for anyone to use, because I have every one of them on my ftp machine. That doesn't stop someone from burning them onto a set of CDs and then selling the CDs for what it costs to make the set. Eugene doesn't get any money from the transaction. So is he "commercial" in that context? For Crafty, I can certainly state that I have _never_ received one red cent for it. About 4-5 years ago we mysteriously received a check from some Crafty user. I think it was for $50 and came with a note saying basically "thanks for providing such a free program. Here is something to encourage you to con- tinue doing this. Consider this a freeware registration fee." I don't recall what we did with that check, however. But I certainly don't receive a penny from Chessbase or anyone else, and do not consider crafty a "commercial product" by any definition I can think of. Of course, I also do not consider myself an "amateur" since computer chess has been an integral part of my professional career for 30+ years now...
