It was possible to create an interface for gnuchess because gnuchess is a command-line program. XBoard/WinBoard just redirects input and output. The stuff that XBoard/WinBoard expects to see is documented, so other programs can send the same stuff to stdout, and expect to read the same stuff from stdin, and work file. The commercial programs aren't command-line programs, they use graphical interfaces, so this method won't work. In order to automate them, someone would have to figure out how to dummy up the Donninger autoplayer somehow, but I doulbt it would work very well even if someone could do it. It's up to the program authors to automate their programs. I've been advocating this for a long time. Some of them do it, and some of them don't, for whatever reason. A big reason given is that European phone rates are very high, even for local calls, so being on the net is expensive for these guys. They aren't as net-crazy as some of the rest of us are. bruce
