I consider that to be the same for all means and purposes.

If you are a professional and you write a free program, does that
make the program an amateur? I don't think so, as your extra
resources as a pro will/should show in the design of it.

For an example, compare Gerbil to other amateur engines of
the same strength. I think it clearly shows that it was done
by a professional (well, unless Bruce doesn't think he's a
pro, but I hope you get the point).

Well as an academic he is paid to research on the chess/AI/parallel stuff,
making him a professional chessprogram. He _is_ paid for it after all.

(Well, I'm quite sure he isn't listed on the payroll as 'pro chess
programmer' though ;)
