From a psychologic point of view I think that you are living an interior
conflict : you enjoy to spend some spare time discussing about abstract topics
(chess and computer chess are very abstract since they don't have a practical
application...they are self aim mind games) , but on the other side you realize
that your time and talent should be spent for something really useful for the
humanity.
I think you need to realize that the "ludic" aspect of our life can't be
completely frustrated and suffocated without collateral effects on the mental
health, so it's just a matter to find a good compromise between duty and
pleasure. We aren't just "homo sapiens" , we are also "homo ludens".
