I used to feel this way about some fields of human endeavor, but now I don't.

Time and money spent on culture will always weigh against time and money spent
fullfilling basic needs.

For the foreseeable future, we're going to have big problems. Maybe at some
point the big problems would be solved, but I'm not holding my breath.

In the mean time, society will roll along, and it it will be possible to pay
money to listen to the symphony, unless society completely caves in, and perhaps
even then.

If society cancelled the symphony until everyone was fed, maybe feeding people
would be a higher priority, but society doesn't seem to work like this. Society
will find resources for cultural stuff even if everyone is reduced to eating
rats.

I contribute to society to an extent that I feel comfortable with. Beyond that,
my time is my own, and anyone who tries to divert me away from things that I
want to do, is going to get a negative reaction.

If you are looking for a way to pay your obligations to society, you may wish to
run for moderator, since elections are coming up soon.
