While the Excalibur handhelds are not as strong they are still strong enough for 75% (or more) of the world's chessplayers. To me, the big difference is in value (price). One can buy an Excalibur Handheld for as little as what it takes to feed my family of 4 at McDonald's for lunch (around $18.00 U.S.). Also, as Christophe Theron already pointed out, if you already own a Palm, you can get a "top-flight" chess program for only $25.00. Chess Tiger is a very serious program for serious players. You won't outgrow it!!! Finally, there is the convenience factor. Why be tied to a PC on a nice summer day when you can be outside playing the game! Play a game on the bus. Play a move here...a move there.... whenever you get a few free minutes. All this is possible with a handheld...not so with a desktop PC. I'm a big fan of handheld computer chess.
