Not only do they pollute and suck petroleum reserves, but they kill and mame people, make an enourmous ammoount of noise (I was hiking on the appalachian trail this summer - which crosses under I-40 in TN. I could here the interstate from 5 miles away - at least I didn't have to worry about any bears being nearby), fill up junkyards and landfills, etc. etc. I guess pollution is their biggest problem when it comes to the planet though. Sucking the earth dry could be a salvation, but it's of the same type of salvation as nuking the whole planet - the harder we make it for us to live (whether we intend it or not), the easier it'll be - in the long run - for evertything around us to live, because a human's natural tendency is to destroy natural things - like trees and clean water - and creat unnatural things - like nuclear warheads and chess programs.
