Subject: Compiling a chess program for WINBOARD/ZIPPY under Windows 95

A GNU C compiled chess program running under Windows 95 does not work
with WINBOARD or ZIPPY to the Internet Chess Server ICS. The symptom is
that the front-end Winboard, runs, but the back-end chess program either
started and immediately exited or never started at all.

There are reports that GNU C++, Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 or later,
and Linux all run fine with Winboard/Zippy to ICS. Lacking the
time and wherewithall to set all this up, I was hoping for a simpler
solution.

Tim Mann suggested trying Cygnus's 32-bit version of GNU C called
CYGWIN32 consisting of the downloads USERTOOLS.EXE and CDK.EXE from
http://www.cygnus.com. So I downloaded these
(about 15mb), recompiled my program and after a couple of false starts,
got it compiled.

Now when it is run under Winboard and/or with Zippy, the back-end starts
and runs fine. The result: I can use WINBOARD to play graphics chess on
ICS or use WINBOARD/ZIPPY to have my chess program play on ICS (for
debugging and strengthening purposes.)
