You're not an idiot. I've had a color Palm (33MHz Prism, overclocked to 42+)
for nearly a year, and use it for lots of things besides chess. But this past
week I just bought an iPAQ even though I shouldn't spend the money. [Being laid
off from my job means less money ... but more time!]

I must say, the iPAQ is a pleasant surprise so far. It has extras I didn't know
about, like the ability to recognize cursive handwriting, a feature I missed
from the Apple Newton. And I don't hate the GUI nearly as much as I'd feared.
Yes, seeing a directory with 95 DLLs in it on my handheld is depressing after
having used the Palm, but there are other positives. The iPAQ is faster and has
much better sound. The resolution is higher (although I could've gotten the
Sony Palm clone with even higher res for less money).

My final reasons to buy the iPAQ were:

1. A sale of $440 US after rebates.

2. I will program for it in my upcoming home-based business (hopefully), so I
can deduct the purchase cost from my taxes.

3. There are 2 good chess programs so far (Genius and Shredder/"Fritz") for it,
and Tiger is coming soon. [9 months ago, none of these was available for the
PocketPC, which is one reason I went with the Palm platform.]

4. I already had several CompactFlash cards and they're pretty useful on the
iPAQ.

5. Although there is less software available than for PalmOS, there is still
quite a lot of nice stuff for free or cheap. And more every week.

But I would NOT part with my PalmOS handheld either!
