Larry Kaufman is really good as a chess advisor. We learned a lot
about computer chess together. He was not a programmer, and yet
his contribution was very substantial. I often joked (but it was
probably true) that he knew more about our chess programs than I
did! It turns out that he was intimately familiar with every
aspect of the program and completely understood all the algorithms.
In fact he designed many of them. We were an excellent team and
worked quite well together. I really miss his input.

But over the years, he seems to have burned out or lost interest in
computer chess. He is now playing actively in tournaments but he
rarely gets involved in the chess program. We still list him as
a coauthor (along with many others) but his contribution is tiny.
On Cilkchess 1.0, he spent 40 minutes on the telephone helping me
massage the opening book and another hour giving me some positional
weight values. His judgements on these sorts of things are great.

Every program I write, I try to get something from him just so I
can continue to list him as an author. If he was actively working
we me again, Cilkchess would be a much better program. I can't
think of anyone who would be more useful to the project than him.

He also lives in DC while I'm in Massachussetts. But we still talk
occasionally and I visit him when I'm passing through. I just can't
get him interested anymore.
