The P4 is such an unbalanced design. It's IPC is laughable, it's advanced features almost useless for normal applications. One could see it as a mediocre desig coupled with a multi-DSP. I have done some programming of DSPs and its tricky as hell and not usable on garden variety tasks. Intel's superior compiler is the only thing that makes it on par with the K7, unfortunatelly for Intel the compiler generates executables that are very fast on the AMD processor too.
