Anyway I have never seen a free M-chess myself.

M-Chess Pro is also still advertized here for 98DM (is that about 50 Euro?):

I believe our Mogens is author of the screenshots and information on these
programs, at least the winboard-engines? I think this is also still just DOS,
the version that played in Paderborn or so last year did not make it to the
market as far as I know. Aren't you maybe mistaking with the Chess Genius from
Richard Lang that was distributed for free a while ago? At first it was not
clear then on this board if Richard Lang had given his permission for the
GNU-style distribution of his program (Should it maybe be called Chess GNiUs?)
