The program does not run slower merely because these features exist; they have to be turned on. If you want a stripped down version, close all of the windows in the Game Room, switch to a nice 2D board, and play chess. What's the incentive for taking the development time to take out features that can just as easily not be used? As for having The King be fully-featured outside the CM GUI, this is highly unlikely. You can see my response to Steve Maughan's post regarding my impression of how Ubi Soft makes decisions, and it applies to this possibility as well. But, once again, you make a reasonable suggestions, so I will pass it along. But, another reason is time. The Chessmaster development team has always been on a tight schedule, and this year we have one less programmer. Our Alpha deadline is in just over two months, so adding new features at this point is pretty much not an option. The reason that The King does not internally support opening books is mainly that Johan wants to keep his engine pristine and tight. All it does is play chess and doesn't rely on outside data for its moves. This also allows CM to use the opening book data outside of a game situation without having to ping the engine (such as for the Advice and Game Analysis features). Johan makes a cleaner faster engine, and CM gets more flexibility with its data. This is the way the EGDB support for CM2003 is going to work as well. The GUI will ping the tablebases if the number of pieces gets small enough, make the move that it finds, and tell the engines that it made the move. This is exactly the way the opening books work. jm
