The approach of Yace is completely different from many other chess engines. The basic priciple of the engine is not bitboards, but uses an array board representation. There are things in crafty not in Yace, and things in Yace not in crafty. I seem to recall (from some time in the distant past) that eventually Dieter plans to make the source public [but I could be mistaken].
