It seems to me that you are stating just the way that the newest programs are working now. Sometimes they make mistakes and lose, and some programs learn from your moves by modifing their books or lines of play in accordance with the person or 'program' that they are playing against. What I remember about A.I. was the program should be able to make decisions based upon its programming and learn from its mistakes and many of todays programs do just that. The only problem that I have seen is that many people do not want to call that artifical intelligence. The key issue I believe, is the programs ability to learn and modify its code, and there is much more work to do in that respect, but in all fairness, they all involve A.I., whether most people call it that or not.
