It takes approximately a factor of 2-3 to get another ply. if hardware is 9 times faster, we get about 2 more plies. Not 20+ as you give above. IE in 2005 look for search depths to hit maybe 2 plies more than today, assuming that the processors will really be doing 20ghz by then...
