I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly, but the following might be a reason for confusion: Most Chess programs measure the depth in plies, i.e., half moves. The principal variation of a Mate in 11 is 21 plies long, so w/o search extensions, a program would have to search to a depth of 21 (actually they probably need an additional ply to detect the mate). So there's not much of a chance to detect the mate at a depth of 11. The program detected the mate at depth 16, since it uses extensions, i.e., searches some "interesting" or critical lines deeper than to the nominal depth. Cheers, Sven.
