Two things: a) One of the ideas behind the GPL is that there exists no such thing as intellectual property. If you don't want to other people to rip off your _ideas_ (or, to put it differently: you don't want to share them with the rest of us), then do not use the GPL. b) The GPL protects your program by means of copyright. If they take (parts) of your code and use it in their own program _and_ publish it, you can force them to publish their program under the GPL also. What GPL wont protect you from is for example someone ripping off your program, changing the name and putting it on a chess server or entering it into a tournament. (although most tournaments seem to have rules preventing the latter now) -- GCP
