These moves would only be played if the book isn't optimized for best play
and IMO any game where you intend to create a rating or a tournament game the
book MUST be optimized.

As optimized requires a minimum of two games with the move, and therefore at 16.
Bg5 white should be looking for the correct move for itself to play.

As for the single line, seems to me likely a simple book error. And that after
23. Nf3 then the piece at g2 could be taken.
