ChessWorks 3 is a server/client package for graphical online chess-play and/or chat. Currently at beta 9, ChessWorks 3 is available as separate PPC and Carbon downloads for Macintosh, and Win32 for the rest of you. Go to <http://www.ekimsw.com/chessworks/cw3/beta.html>. I have been a user of ChessWorks for over two years. Version 2 was only available for Macintosh. I've used it to play over 2000 games. I've made a number of friends and, I think, a number of enemies. :) Any static ip can run a server. In practice, there have only ever been 3 owing (I suspect) to the small number of Macintosh users with a chess obsession. Client penetration currently ranges from non-existent (depending on server and time of day/night) to a dozen simultanous users. Two of the current servers have associated websites: <http://members.home.net/idutch/> in Canada and <http://www.spony.net/chess/html_cw.html> in Denmark. The third server is in the Netherlands. ChessWorks 3 is a work in progress. It is a complete rewrite from version 2. It's author, Mike Bailey, is a young man who wrote his first version before he knew what 'en passant' was. :) There is much to like in the program and not a few things to dislike. The current attempt at 'rating', for example, neither works nor, in my opinion, is necessary. Documentation is sparse... Nevertheless, I've seen the betas progress to a point where the pgn now works properly and game-watching is reliable. The program desparately needs Win32 users/testers. I currently know of only two. If you're game for a little informal chess play and/or chat, give this little gem a try.
