Your post is extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to write it. It turns out that Tridgell suggests what Remi did to obtain the vector of partial derivatives. I understand the fundamental theorem of calculus ... my confusion was related to the term "partial derivative" and how that related to a vector. I'm going to take some time to digest everything you've explained, but that's probably the approach I will take. Thanks again for the helpful post. -- James
