I bought one when I took a full-time job outside the house AND I discovered there were strong chess programs available (at that time, it was just Chess Genius). Then I lost my job and I'm home most of the time anyway. I can think of a few good things about having the handheld device anyway: 1. When you do go out, you always have useful info, like phone numbers, handy. 2. If you find yourself waiting in line or at a doctor's office or something similar, with the Palm you can always have a variety of enjoyable diversions, including of course a strong opponent for chess. 3. If you use it to take notes (I usually don't) or to remind you to do things or whatever, when you hot-sync, all this is automatically backed up to your PC. 4. Even when I'm at home, I'm not always next to a running computer. The Palm can be handy for little things around the house or if you can't sleep, etc. Anyway, I have a nice color unit which today would cost about US$275, which can still seem pretty expensive for such a gadget but it's all relative. Good luck in whatever you choose! -Roy.
