 Personally I find it be the other way around, as far as chess is concerned.
 Without human opponent and when nothing is at stake, it's harder, at least
 for me, to keep up the intensity, the concentration and the depth of play.
 Distraction and careless moves happen more often when playing for fun.
 But I guess this could be individual of course...
