FYI: I am adding database server capabilities to the freeware chess position/game database program CDB. This will allow programs to connect to CDB via a simple stream socket and make queries about positions in FEN notation and get statistics and annotations back, among other things. The server feature is present in rudimentary form in the current revision (1.2); to see the present command set, execute File->Server in CDB, use telnet to connect to the port on localhost, and type "help". I hope that this feature provides a quick and easy way for chess programmers to get opening book capabilities without a lot of reinvention of the wheel; suggestions are most welcome.
