Not quite.  VMS was the Vax operating system.  Unix pre-dates that by 10
years or so...  VMS was _way_ inferior to unix also.  I ran a VMS shop
at USM for many years.  I much preferred my PDP 11/44 with unix (from Ken
Thompson) to the vax 11/780 even though the vax was way faster hardware.
