I'm looking into getting a new computer. It will be used mainly for word processing, so I am free to customize the components to deliver a stronger system for running chess software. If I could choose bewteen a 1.0 GHz P4, a 1.0 GHz P3, or a 1.0GHz Celeron, which one should I choose strictly for chess purposes? If there is a difference for chess programs, how much slower will the Celeron be than the P4, assumeing the same processor speed? If the choice was between a 1.7 GHz P4 with a 400 MHz bus speed, and a 1.7 GHz P3 with a 133 MHz Bus speed, which one should I choose strictly for chess purposes? If there is a difference, how much would it be? Should I choose RDRAM (which is in P4's) or SDRAM, given that each is 256 M and the SDRAM is not "shared" (whatever that means). Once again, if there is a difference for a chess program, how big will it be? If I choose SDRAM, how much difference in a chess program's speed will there between the 100 MHz and the 133 MHz varieties? Given any type of RAM, if I double it from say 256 to 512, will that increase the speed of a chess program?
