Book is. If a program has little knowledge, then short book lines or losing book lines is a major disaster in short. With diep i already have major problems here, not to mention crafty. Also don't forget that this championship is 90 0. All games on the internet where crafty is tuned for are against usually humans and way faster levels. In diep it seems also something is real bad tuned for slow level. I didn't even manage to win from a program called Spiderchess (though in analysis it appeared it with some luck played the openings setup pretty solid). Most lucky so far was Rebel. Each opening won out of book. Of course all but one game. The zero against tiger i had already written down of course. Everyone knew in advance tiger would win. I was lucky to draw Rebel in a lost position for DIEP. Against The King i was also surprised. Every game i was surprised. the crafty experiment with 1.e4,c5 2.Bc4 was not so smart in the end, but well Michel could not have prepared for 2..Nf6 of course. Now i think 2..Nf6 was a very good move. Directly advantage for black, though engines do not see it. One day d5 and black was better, though during the game i was not so impressed by 8..Be6 it now appears to do its job pretty well. Faster hardware would not have helped there. The seemingly silly queen moves from Crafty against DIEP are not something which a deeper serach will solve. All crafty tries to prevent is partly delay DIEP from castling and in fact DIEP didn't mind that at all initially. For that delay DIEP got itself a superb pawn structure. Nevertheless Crafty plays with its own hand made book (and behind that an automatically generated book). I only played so far with hand made book only. 15500 moves to be precise. Way too little to cover all the sidelines i've seen so far. >-- >GCP
