Take a look at www.linuxtoday.com, www.linuxnewbie.org, and www.linuxworld.com.
One of those sites had a recent comparison of the Linux distributions done by PC
Magazine I believe.

The leading distros are Red Hat and SuSE.  I'm a little partial to SuSE because
of the Oracle certification effort and its compatibilty with our HP Unix
scripts.  And for a first time foray into Linux, I think it would be best to
start with either Red Hat or SuSE.
