Yes they have to port the OS. A major effort.

From what I know (and what sounds logical), they are going to introduce a new OS
called PalmOS 5 which will be a native ARM-core OS. They are also going to
provide "emulation boxes" (exactly like DOS boxes under Windows) so all existing
software in native 68000 code (DragonBall) will still work.

It is likely that legacy 68000 software will run slightly slower than on current
devices, while new software compiled for ARM will naturally be something like 10
times faster.

The level of integration between new and legacy software remains unknown (will
you have to open an emulation box to launch legacy software or will it be fully
automatic), but the important thing is that PalmOS is going to evolve without
discarding all the existing software.
