I believe the 1700 is a 1.47Ghz chip. That sounds like a good price for that system. I recently priced out a hand built system with similar specs (except for 512M of ram instead of 256), and it came out to $1250, but thats with no software. I don't believe LCD monitors are suited towards action games, so if you play any, I'd get a CRT instead. > >The place is MicronPC.com. The company I used to work for had many Micron PC's. They are a fairly large company. To the best of my knowledge they make a nice product for a competitive price. I would have no qualms ordering from them personally. > >PS: I'll get the Windows XP operating system. I hear this program is massively >bloated with "stuff". Its basically Win2k with some interface tweaks, but I guess I'm a sucker for a pretty face. I run it on an Athlon 1.33Ghz with 256M of ram and have experienced no memory shortages at all. 200 dollars is way too much to spend on 256M of ram. Better to buy it and install it yourself if you really want it. Its not hard to do at all. >PPS: I don't know whether I'll be using HIARCS in the Fritz interface, or >Fritz7. Assuming both are properly coded, the interface wouldn't stress your memory at all, it would be whatever hashtables you assign to the engine itself. You may get a few Elo points difference with the larger tables allowed by the additional ram, but you'll never notice the difference. For chess applications you would only really need more than 256M if you are running a multiprocessor system anyhow. -Kevin
