Just upgraded to WinXP this weekend. If you have 9x/ME, I think it's a good upgrade. If you have Win2k, I don't think it's worthwhile to do the upgrade. I paid $150 gross for XP (home, upgrade) plus a bunch of other stuff, from OfficeMax.com. I used a coupon to get $25 off. I will get a $50 rebate, which makes the other stuff essentially free. My net cost will be just a little over $75 (because of tax) for the upgrade from Win98 and all the other stuff. I don't think that's excessive for what you get. My fiancee made a similar purchase from Staples (so we don't run into conflicting rebates, we bought from separate stores which have separate rebate programs). I first installed XP onto a separate partition from 98, but was very disappointed for 2 reasons: first, the tool to migrate all your settings over only does it for a few select apps. The vast majority of your apps do not benefit. And second, I've used a PC daily for years and years, and cannot imagine spending the months required to re-install everything, get all the upgrades off the net, and re-create all my preferences, for the hundreds of apps I use. So, I re-installed XP, this time right over Win98se. I know this is considered a bad thing to do, and indeed I had some problems with stability. But it's still better than Win98se by a long shot, it's quite stable overall, and it lets me hit the ground running as far as all my old apps are concerned. Nearly everything works at least as well as it did under Win98se. Those that don't work any more (my backup program, Rebel Century 3, Partition Magic 6) I was warned of in advance either by Microsoft or in this forum, and I'm prepared to upgrade or do without. Bottom line: upgrade if you have Win9x/ME, don't if you have Win2k. (Can't comment on NT4.)
