A little exercise:

Pawn on a3 came from c7 originally
Pawn on a5 came from a7 originally
Pawn on b4 came from d7 originally
Pawn on b6 came from b7 originally
Pawn on c5 came from e7 originally
Pawn on d4 came from f7 originally
Pawn on e5 came from g7 originally

This would require a total of 10 captures, the fewest possible to reach this
position (other possibilities are same or worse). White is missing 1 pawn and 5
pieces, which means Black has made exactly 6 captures.

Indeed, illegal!
