Perhaps the actual SSDF match results against other dedicated units would be more enlightening than a single rating number. http://home.swipnet.se/~w-36794/ssdf/nr050.htm Summary: Sapphire II loses to Montreux, Atlanta (SH7000 20 MHz ), RISC 2500, Vancou. 68000, Sapphire II is even with Vancou. 68020, Berlin 68000, Lyon 68000, Sapphire (?!), Milano Pro, Sapphire II wins against Portor. 68000, Almeria 68000, President, Meph. MM 5, Polgar 5 MHz, Meph. Milano, Super Exp. C, Academy 5 MHz, Meph. Mega IV, Meph. Modena, Sphinx Galaxy, Mega IV BF, Super Exp. A, Super Mondial. Note that the Sapphire II has not played many recent computers in the SSDF: R30 v. 2.5, Meph Genius 68 030 33 MHz, Berlin Pro 68 020 24 MHz. Nor any of the Fidelity units. Conclusion: the SSDF is not a good tool for evaluating the Sapphire II. Ian PS. I found ChessGenius on a stock Palm IIIe to be slightly weaker than a Sapphire II at short time controls, and significantly weaker at longer ones (no hash). ChessGenius on an iPAQ dominates the Sapphire II at all time controls (206 MHz, small hash).
