It isn't how "early" you probe... It is how "deep" that controls the overall speed. Crafty will probe starting at ply=2 regardless of what the chessbase gui says, because this isn't controllable directly. It will never probe in the q-search, and it won't probe in the last few plies if the search has extended significantly. All to keep the overhead down.
