For example I couldn't kill the clocks in layouts. If I saved a layout then reloaded it, the clocks always came back. Also, when starting the program it asked if I wanted to play Fritz 7 or play chess online. I am only interested in Fritz 7, so that required an unnecessary mouse click. Also, the Fritz 7 interface did not allow me to choose between the Fritz 7 (with MMX) and Fritz 7 (No MMX) engines. It hid the distinction between those two engines and always selected the slower Fritz 7 (with MMX) engine -- which my tests indicate may be buggy!? With Fritz 7 (the MMX engine version) I found several examples of very stupid blunders in the analysis in Infinite Analysis mode involving the Queens, such as giving away one's Queen, or failing to capture opponent's Queen. Fritz 7 (with MMX) also tends to "hang" on a particular variation/move, or take a long time in Infinite Analysis mode (similar to HiArcs 7.32), so doesn't seem very well suited for correspondence chess analysis of an hour or more. Also, Fritz 7 did not appear in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, so there is apparently no way to uninstall it cleanly. Also, it did not fix the old longstanding Fritz GUI display bug for kN/s when the number goes over 1,000,000. Finally, I note that it required 572MB of hard disk space which seems very greedy. However I guess most of that is the database which could be deleted, or copied to a CD. Bottom line: I like the Deep Fritz interface better, so I went back to it. The Fritz 7 (with MMX) engine seems unreliable, but the Fritz 7 (no MMX) engine looks OK so far in my tests. I'm running W98se, and don't know what happens with other windows versions. WP
