At the same clock speed, Athlons run hotter than Pentium 3s or 4s. Most P4s run at higher clock speeds than most Athlons, though, so you have to factor that in. As for being less stable, well, yes and no. AFAIK, there are no major compatibility problems with the AMD processor itself. The real problem is that AMDs are generally sold with VIA chipsets, and VIA chipsets have more compatibility problems than Intel chipsets. So while not 100% correct, the broad generalization that AMD runs hotter and is less stable/compatible is true. I still think AMD is a good choice, though. -Tom
